History books indicates that one night in the year 610, the first of many revelations came to Muhammad from God by way of the angel Gabriel. The message Muhammad received told him that there was but one God, not many gods, as most Arabs believed. This God was creator of the world, and He would one day judge mankind. The word Islam means surrender or submission, submission to the will of Allah, the one God. Muslims are those who have submitted themselves. The basic creed of Islam is brief: There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah. slam teaches that there is one God, the creator and sustainer of the universe. This God, Allah, is compassionate and just. Because He is compassionate, He calls all people to believe in Him and worship Him. Because He is also just, on the Last Day He will judge every person according to his deeds. On the Last Day, all t he dead will be resurrected and either rewarded with heaven or punished with hell. The life of each Muslim is always within the community of the faithful, all are declared to be brothers to each other, with he mission to enjoin good and forbid evil. Within the community, Muslims are expected to establish social and economic justice. They are also expected to carry their message out to the rest of the world. In the early Islamic community, this meant the use of force in the form of jihad, or holy war. The object of jihad was to gain political control over societies and run them in accordance with the principles of Islam. During the decades following the death of Muhammad certain essential principles were singled out rom his teachings to serve as anchoring points for the Islamic community. These have come to be called the five pillars of Islam. The revelations that Muhammad received were collected into a new book, the Koran, directing his followers what to believe and how to live. Man y Muslims believed that everything Muhammad said and did was inspired by Allah, many reports of his sayings and deeds were collected. At first these were just remembered and spread by word of mouth. Later they were captured in writing, to serve as an additional guide for believers, along with the Koran. It was Muhammad's contention that Christianity had departed from belief in God's message as revealed in their Scriptures. God had sent many prophets, among them Abraham, who is considered the founder of the faith for Islam, as he is also for and Christianity. The Koran, using sources in the older Scriptures and later traditions, relates the stories of Abraham, Joseph, Moses and Aaron, David, Solomon, Jesus. After Muhammad's death in AD 632, it was feared that the content of the revelations might be lost, as those who had originally memorized it died. It was therefore decided to collect all the revelations, from what ever source, and make a compilation. Even at this early date, variat ions in the Korans revelations were becoming common in different parts of the new Islamic empire. An authorized version was created, with arrangement of putting the longer chapters first and the shorter one last. The hajj, pilgrimage, is an annual Muslim rite that every believer is expected to take part in at least once in his lifetime. From the seventh to the tenth day in Dhu al- Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar, thousands of Muslims converge on the city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia to visit the holy shrine of the Kaaba in the Great Mosque. The pilgrimage culminates with the feast of sacrifice, one of the two major festivals that are celebrated during the Islamic year. Through The Looking Glass was written by Lewis Carroll in 1872. The story is about a little girl called Alice, a character based on Alice Liddell, one of the daughters of the Dean of Christ Church, Oxford. The book is very different from other stories written at the time; Lewis Carroll takes his heroine, Alice, into a world of fantasy to be found behind her lounge mirror. Alice is made into a very independent little girl, making many of her own decisions and at times being quite rude. This would not have been how a child would have behaved in Victorian Society; they were seen and not heard! Once through the looking glass Alice finds herself in a world where everything is back to front: she has to walk towards the house to walk in the garden and events are felt before they happen: the White Queen puts a bandage on her finger, then screams with pain and then pricks her finger. All the animals and flowers in the book are given human characteristics and can talk. she spoke again, in a timid voice-almost in a whisper. And can all the flowers talk? As well as you can, said the Tiger-Lily. And a great deal louder. She also meets nursery rhyme characters such as Humpty Dumpty who is acting out his nursery rhyme exactly. Alice finds herself in a long and complicated game of chess in which she is a pawn and has to follow certain moves to become a queen and reach the end of the game; once again the chess pieces are given human characteristics. At the end of the book Alice finds that the red queen has turned into her kitten and that she is still sitting in her lounge. The whole episode has been a dream. There are no morals or messages in this book. Aesops fables are a good example of childrens stories with morals. Mainly using animals, like Lewis Carrolls given human characteristics, to act out a story with a moral ending. In The Hare and The Tortoise two animals race each other. The hare knows he is faster than the tortoise and decides to take a rest; he falls asleep and wakes up just in time to see the tortoise win. Meanwhile, the slow old tortoise had been plodding on doggedly. He passed the tree and the sleeping hare. Then he passed the winning post. The moral of this is Slow and steady can win the race. In Aesops tales animals are used to illustrate stories and the roles they play show their true way of life: In The Hare and The Tortoise the hare was fast and the tortoise slow. In Through The Looking Glass the animals take on roles that are not natural to them and are pure fantasy. Similarly in the Beatrix Potter books animals are clothed, able to speak and take on human characters as can be seen by Mrs Tiggywinkle doing the washing. Roald Dahls book The BFG written in1982 is similar to Through The Looking Glass in some ways. The heroine, a little girl called Sophie, is a normal child and has no strange or imaginary powers. Like Alice she is very independent and makes all her own decisions. Unlike Lewis Carrolls book the main characters in the stories i. e. the giants are totally imaginary and use made up words and eat made up foods. Sophie said: What do you drink? Frobscottle, announced the BFG. All giants is drinking frobscottle. They live a totally imaginary existence unlike any human being. Roald Dahl also introduces some real life characters into his book like the Queen and her staff and the Armed Forces. Like Alice, Sophie is given great influence over these people. In Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone by J. K. Rowling written in 1997 Harry looks like a normal boy and to a certain extent acts like a normal boy but, unlike Alice and Sophie, is given magical powers. Objects are given magical powers like the broomsticks. Harrys broom jumped into his hand at once, but it was one of the few that did. Mystical creatures such as dragons appear, but none of these take on human characteristics. In the nonsense verse, which was so popular at this time, especially that by Edward Lear, creatures are totally imaginary and bear no resemblance to living creatures. In The Dong With The Luminous Nose the Dong is an imaginary creature living in a totally imaginary place and all the names are made up. Landing at Eve near the Zemmery Fidd Where the oblong oysters grow. This is similar to Through The Looking Glass where Alice enters an imaginary world and also to a certain extent in Harry Potter where Harry goes through the wall at the railway station to find platform 9 3/4 and the Hogwarts Express and many of the other place settings are made up. The barrier was coming nearer and nearer-he wouldnt be able to stop-the trolley was out of control-he was a foot away-he closed his eyes ready for the crash- It didnt come.. he kept on running.. he opened his eyes. A scarlet steam engine was waiting next to a platform crowded with people. In The BFG real places are mixed with imaginary as you have the caves where the giants live but then the main parts of the story take place in London at Buckingham Palace. Lewis Carroll uses nonsense poems in his story such as The Walrus And The Carpenter where the walrus and the carpenter take all the little oysters for a walk and end up eating them! But answer came there none- And this was scarcely odd, because Theyd eaten every one! The oysters are again given human characteristics by mentioning their shoes and making them able to talk and walk on two feet. Poems do not play a big part in either The BFG or Harry Potter. The language in Through The Looking Glass is very correct. The grammar is as you would expect a Victorian book to be written. The text is quite clear and easy to follow. Lewis Carroll does use many puns throughout the book. It sounds like a horse, Alice thought to herself. And an extremely small voice, close to her ear, said, you might make a joke on that- something about horse and hoarse you know. The same can be said of Aesops Fables that are written very clearly and for a younger child, using simple words. Some of the language used by Lewis Carroll is very adult and long words are used that a child may not know the meaning of. In Aesops Fables a child could easily read and understand the text. J. K. Rowling also writes in a way that a child can understand, once again the book is very grammatical and clearly written. In some instances she uses made up words to name items, objects and animals that are imaginary and made up purely for the story. This balls called the Quaffle, said Wood. The chasers throw the Quaffle to each other and try to get it through one of the hoops to score a goal. Roald Dahl writes so a child can easily understand what the story is about. Importance of Leadership Leadership is something that stands out in people. In a group, people tend to look to the strongest person to follow. However, the strongest person may not be the best choice to follow. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack each have leadership qualities. Jack is probably the stronger of the two; however, Ralph is a better leader. He has a better understanding for the boys. He also has more common sense and treats the boys better than Jack.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ralph shows that he has a better understanding of the boys than Jack. He knows that the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules for them. Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Ralph knows that the littleuns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. They work together for a while, but as the time goes on the smaller boys want to go play. They slowly lose all their help until Simon and Ralph are the only ones left to work on them. Ralph knows that this is a necessity and keeps bringing it up at the meetings. The body is carried on a wooden frame to a publically designated cremation site where mourners chant mantras. After the body has been cremated, bits of bone and ash that remain are collected and strewn into the Holy River. Ten days after the cremation, family members offer ten pindas to the river to feed the spirit of the deceased on its travels to the next incarnation. Buddhists hold simple, solemn funerals. They believe it is unnecessary to spend a lot of money on traditional ceremonies. During the viewing, an altar is set up in front of the casket.Mourners can place offerings such as fruit, flowers and candles on the altar. A life well planned can cost us our freedom and our ability to make decisions which are radically different from our previous ones. When desire, lust and romance have been deselected and †the normal life† has taken its place. These obstacles are what William meets and sooner confronts in the short story by Polly Clark called †Elephant†. The story begins in media res, so as soon as the story begins we get engulfed. We are meeting William sitting at his desk surrounded by notes and facts, where his Muse has left him and he has trouble finding inspiration writing biographies of pop singers as Christine, who he finds most adorable and attracted to (l. 46 – 51). The character Christine can be interpreted as Christina Aguilera, who, with her voice and her sexual behaviour, usually is very appealing for average men. William is the typical American man, who has settled down with his wife and currently is trying to start a family. Their marriage is not filled with romance and love as one could expect, but more with expectations and compromises and it furthermore seems like William does not want a baby as much as his wife does. His mind is filled with thoughts of his biographies and how Christine must have wanted him to write about her (l. 71-72 and 76). He easily gets distracted from his thoughts and one could imagine that they are filled with his lost childhood and the things he had never been able to do in life. His flash-back to the moment when his mother gives him the blue elephant (l. 9-66) could easily be interpreted as the childhood his mother tries to give him. However, at first he could not remember the blue elephant from his childhood. It had vanished from his memory. The only thoughts that go through his mind are how he can revenge his lost childhood and regain consciousness of his identity. The narrator tells us at line 21-22: †William would have preferred the film stars (male, golden age of cinema) but those had been claimed by someone quicker of the mark †¦Ã¢â‚¬ . This specific passage shows that William was needed to give up his dream because someone got in his way. By writing about male actors it would have been possible for him to get famous and his life would thereby be complete. Happiness and celebrity goes hand in hand in his mind, but ever since he had to choose another career, his dreams fell apart and he was, in his own eyes, nothing but an ordinary man. That is why he is writing about the female pop singers so in that way he partly can fulfil his dreams through the women. Nevertheless, this solution does not satisfy his desires, since he cannot relate to these women. He can relate to the male actors because of their sex, but the difference between men and women in this context becomes a huge factor for him and that gives him reason to change the stories about the women. Christine gives him trouble because of her pure mind due to her relationship with Christianity (l. 49), and his urge to make her life as miserable as his becomes even stronger. Therefore he synchronizes his life with hers and mixes the blue elephant into her childhood. For him the elephant is a symbol of regret and grief and therefore he tries even harder to make the life of Christine miserable in the eyes of the readers. As he says at line 146-147: †He wanted to give Christine something she had never had, something important of himself. † – the aspects of life he wants to give Christine are defeat and loss because she, to him, never have had a change to experience it in her famous Christian life. But because the negative symbolism of the elephant only exists for him, his made up story about the life of Christine does not become a bad experience for the readers. His attempt to make Christine a bad person is not successful (l. 135-142). That is when he realizes that his profession is not what he wants to do. The name Christine has not been chosen by coincidence and it was solely that choice of name, which gave Christine power over him. The relationship Christine has with God has been transferred to William and through it he is able to confront his obstacles and by typing the untruth about her he learns that, that is not the person he wants to be, and by this realization he becomes complete. Even though he knows that someday he is going to be †vanished from the face of the earth† (l. 148), he feels ready to start living his life again, because he finally has triumphed over his lost childhood and he definitively has found himself. His last falsity gives him the strength to stop telling lies about others, stop living trough others and gives him power to live his own life (l. 142-144). Therefore, the truth is the main theme of this text. As a subcategory comes the blue elephant being a symbol of how important the childhood is for humans. If the blue elephant vanish from the life of a child, pain and regret will come later. Therefore, the story is a form of a aide-memoire in life to parents to teach them how to raise their children. Polly Clark has written this text to tell us how important it is to keep believing in something that helps us maintain our dreams in life pure.

In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlacs follower and the strongest of the geats heard how Grendel filled the nights with horror and quickly commanded a boat to be outfitted (90-94). Thus showing how good at heart Beowulf is by protecting others from evil. When Beowulf arrives at Denmark his reputation proves he has come to help and he and his men are quickly taken into Denmark and Cared for. The Danes explain to Beowulf of the monster and pray he can help them. They agree to watch over his boat for him. Grendel comes one night to find Beowulf and kill him. He kills the first geat he comes to and then awakens Beowulf. Beowulfs strength overpowers that of Grendel and Beowulf mortally wounds the Monster. Others are Functional (enzymes) controlling chemical reactions such as respiration or digestion. Genetic Information is stored by Genes who are arranged on Chromosomes. Variation: This is the Difference between humans. There are two types of variation.
