Leadership That Gets Results What Do Effective Leaders Do? â€Å"What do effective leaders do to remain effective?† was a question that I proposed to my Leadership Application Program Speakers Round Table Class. In response I received a number of answers from personality traits to emotional intelligence. Leadership is a word that can be defined in many different ways. In the article â€Å"Leadership That Gets Results† they take the time and breakdown the six different steps of leadership, the six styles are coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching. The late David McClelland, a noted Harvard University psychologist, found that leaders with strengths in a critical mass of six or more emotional intelligence†¦show more content†¦The authoritative style, powerful though it may be, will not work in every situation. The approach fails, for instance, when a leader is working with a team of experts or peers who are more experienced than he is; they may see the leader as pompous or out-of-touch. Another limitation: if a manager trying to be authoritative becomes overbearing, he can undermine the egalitarian spirit of an effective team. Yet even with such caveats, leaders would be wise to grab for the authoritative club more often than not. It may not guarantee a hole in one, but it certainly helps with the long drive. The Affiliative Style. â€Å"If the coercive leader demands, Do what I say, and the authoritative urges, Come with me, the affiliative leader says, People come first. This leadership style revolves around people-its proponent’s value individuals and their emotions more than tasks and goals. The affiliative leader strives to keep employees happy and to create harmony among them. He manages by building strong emotional bonds and then reaping the benefits of such an approach, namely fierce loyalty. The style also has a markedly positive effect on communication. People who like one another a lot talk a lot. They share ideas; they share inspiration. And the style drives up flexibility; friends trust one another, allowing habitual innovation and risk taking. Honesty Lie and Personal Responsibility Free Essays

Being Honest with Yourself Honesty is the best way to succeed in future endeavors, both in relationships and business. Though being honest can hurt others it is beneficial to succeeding in life. This is a personal responsibility any individual should have both in education and in everyday life. Plagiarism means â€Å"an act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author†(Dictionary. com,2013). Plagiarizing someone’s work is not being honest to the instructor, but most of all not being honest to your own work; it is not showing that you have that personal responsibility to the school work. Researchers have a personal responsibility to be honest on their work. Sometimes when the research is being conducted, the writer will add other more honorary titles into that research; this is less than honest when it comes to a research. When the researchers add extra information that is not valid to the paper it starts to become a lie. In childhood a young child has that personal responsibility to be honest to their parents. If they were not honest with them, normally they would be disciplined for lying. While in school a child will learn how to be honest on their school work and to be honest with their peers. In both aspects they would need to show that they know what honesty is, and that they are responsible for proving that they truly understand what that honesty is. Sometimes when growing up and being taught that being honest is the way life should be and that the individual should always be honest. Honesty does have its time and place. â€Å"Do theses pants make my butt look fat†, for gentlemen this is an all-time question, tell the truth and let your wife know, yes those pants make you look fat, or say honey no you look amazing in those pants. Some honesty could be a little too much for a woman already feeling insecure about her body. So the individual will tell a little white lie and things seem to continue to run smoothly throughout the day and night. Now if the person were a snitch, say for the FBI, this could be a deadly ordeal for that person. Tell the truth only to the FBI and take that chance of being caught by a gang of some sorts, and be killed for saying secret information. Then again if that snitch never gets caught, there might be an amazing award for that person. Going to another country or state might become their haven, and they can continue a normal and productive life. Some views on honesty are that a person is a snitch, or maybe they just do not know how to tell a lie. Either way, honesty is a personal responsibility that most would view as an important aspect to everyday life. Whether it is in school or in everyday life honesty is the best policy. Hellbender Essay The Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis)Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis is the largest North Americansalamander, ranging in length from 30.5 to 74 cm (Niering 1985). EasternHellbenders are members of the order of tailed amphibians, Caudata and thefamily, Cryptobranchidae. Along with C. a. bishopi, the Ozark Hellbender, it isone of the two subspecies of hellbenders, also known as the Allegheny alligatoror devil-dog. C. a. alleganiensis is perennially aquatic, preferring clearfast-moving rivers or large streams with rocky bottoms. Most are found in water12 to 46 cm deep and tend to avoid areas with thick layers of silt (Hillis andBellis 1971). It ranges from the Susquehanna River and its tributaries in NewYork and Pennsylvania to the Ohio River and its tributaries including theAllegheny, which gives it its species name, westward to the Mississippi Riverand southward to Missouri, Arkansas, and Georgia. It has also been recorded inIowa (Bishop 1943). C. a. alleganiensis has a dorsoventrally flattened body anda laterally flattened tail. The tail is the main means of locomotion, but thehellbender can also crawl when seeking refuge (Hillis and Bellis 1971). C. a. alleganiensis is dark gray or olive-brown with a mottled or spotted pattern onits dorsal surface. The ventral surface is a lighter shade with few markings (Niering1985). The male and female are similar in appearance, but the male is broaderand heavier than a female of the same length. Eyelids are absent. It has fivetoes on its hind feet and four on the fore feet, most of which develop duringthe larval stage (Bishop 1943). C. a. alleganiensis is nocturnal, spending itsdays hiding under rocks with only the tip of its broad head exposed. It exhibitsdiurnal behavior only during its mating season which occurs in late summer orearly fall depending on geographic location. (Hillis and Bellis 1971). C. a. alleganiensis practices external fertilization. The male will dig asaucer-shaped nest-like cavity beneath a large, flat rock or sunken log. Thefemale lays 200-500 yellowish eggs in long strings. The male assumes a matingposition above or behind the female and sprays the eggs. The male will thenremain in the area to guard the nest (Niering 1985). Evidence has shown that themale will eat some of these eggs and therefore may remain more to guard his foodsupply than from a sense of parental responsibility (Hillis and Bellis 1971). The larvae will latch two to three months later. The larva are approximately 30mm long and born with gills which they will lose when they are 100-130 mm longat about 18 months, leaving only a single pair of gill slits (Bishop 1943). Thehellbenders principle food source appears to be crayfish, this is most likelyfor convenience since crayfish hide in similar locations as the hellbender. Therest of its diet is composed mainly of other aquatic invertebrates such asmolluscs, worms, and insects. They have also been observed to eat small fish andanimal refuse (Hillis and Bellis 1971).
